The Leafy Seadragon (Phycodurus eques) has adapted to have beautiful leafy appendages that help it camouflage in the weeds. They are a truly a beautiful sight, and when swimming with its tiny fins, gives the appearance of floating seaweed or kelp.

Leafy Seadragon
Leafy Seadragons also have sharp spines for protection on each bony plate. With all of these fabulous adaptations, they actually have no natural predators. Their greatest threat is humans, who collect them for the ornamental and aquarium trade.
I photographed this individual on a dive in Rapid Bay, South Australia. The water was freezing cold, and by the end of the 73 minute dive I had lost feeling in my fingers and toes!
Leafy Seadragons are only found in Southern Australian waters, which made this encounter even all the more special. Truly, the Australian coastline never ceases to amaze me. Around every corner there seems to be another incredibly magical new species to find! The Leafy Seadragon is an iconic symbol for Australian conservation. Its delicate nature and vulnerability to change remind us of the importance of protecting our underwater world.
