Galapagos Sharks were first observed in, you guessed it, the Galapagos Islands. They are found worldwide, and are known to cross oceans, but the only place you can find them in Australia is on the reefs surrounding a tiny island half way to New Zealand, called Lord Howe Island.

Galapagos Shark

This photograph was taken while I was living aboard a sailboat. We were doing our two week quarantine before visiting Lord Howe Island during COVID, and spent a couple of weeks snorkelling at Middleton and Elizabeth Reefs.

In some cultures, sharks are a symbol of protection. In others, they symbolise power and inner strength. Galapagos sharks remind us to stay curious, overcome our fears and go after what we want. They inspire us to grasp the opportunities that come our way, and to move forwards full steam ahead.
