Whale Migration

from $60.00

Each year around 40,000 humpback whales migrate north along the East Coast of Australia. They travel thousands of kilometres to escape the cold Antarctic winter, to the northern Great Barrier Reef! (I don’t blame them). Here, they mate and nurture their young before heading back down south for the summer.

Humpback Whale Migration

I was lucky enough to photograph these whales off North Stradbroke Island, as the whales came so close to the headland we could see the patterns on their backs! It was like being in a real life documentary, we saw whales, turtles, dolphins, and even a school of tuna in the crystal clear waters below.

These images showcase a pod as they waste no time on their journey up to the Great Barrier Reef. Typically, they swim much slower on their way back down, and are usually more playful as they entertain their new calves.

Whales are known for their complex communication skills, emotional depth and strong family bonds. They remind us of the importance of family and community, as well as our ties to all the living creatures on Earth.

Each image is printed on a 100% cotton fibre rag, an archival museum quality material with a vibrant finish.
